The      Annual      School     Manukorero
         Competitions were held this year on May 4th. Pita
         Ngaru,  an  ex-pupil  and  Programme  Manager  at
         Radio  Tainui  was  the  Kaiwhakawa  in  the  Maori
         sections,  and  Helyn  Huirama,  a  parent  of  the
         school  and  teacher  at  Bernard  Fergusson  Kura
         Kaupapa Maori, judged the English.
              Although  it  was  a  long  day,  it  was  very
         successful  and  the  standard  in  all  sections
         continues to rise each year.

         Sir Turi Carroll Trophy (Junior English) - there
         were only three speakers.
              1st   Kataraina Hohua-Ward
              2nd  Kiri Morgan
              3rd   Carly Ruri
         Rawhiti  Ihaka  (Junior Maori) - once again there
         were  only  three  speakers,  but  the  standard  was
         particularly high and all deserved to be first.
              1st   Te Manawaroa Teinakore
              2nd  Hekiera Hunt
              3rd   Kiri Morgan
         Korimako  (Senior  English)  -  the  results  were
         excellent and very closely contested.

              2nd  Te Waipounamu Teinakore
              3rd   Murray Nathan

         Teinakore
         Pei  Te  Hurinui  (Senior  Maori—there  were  19
         speakers in this section and the range of topics was

         enormous    -   from  “Pahiketeporo”  to  “Tama  tu,
         tama  ora”.  Once  again  the  standard  was                      WAIKATO-WAIARIKI
