The “Flying Fox” was put to use once the over-burden had been stripped. The coal was scooped from a trench
in the seam and tipped into a hopper that straddled the railway line. Bulldozers working on the seam kept the
trench full of coal. At intervals the anchor point of the “Flying Fox” was moved to access the coal.
