Joe Templeton, an engineering and draughting teacher at
Ngaruawahia High School, had a desire to establish a football
club in Ngaruawahia.
For several years the High School had fielded football
teams at various levels and he was of the opinion that these boys,
along with other older players from the community, could form
the basis of a club. The High School would be able to provide the
facilities and the playing fields required.
However, despite the club being established as
Ngaruawahia United, entry into the Waikato Senior Competition
for 1968 did not eventuate and the fledgling group looked ahead
to participation in 1969 in the Waikato 2nd Division.
