More Triumph for Dale
28th September 1981
Triumph came again for
Ngaruawahia High School Head
Boy, Dale Timms, when he won
the coveted Korimako Trophy
last Saturday.
Dale recently won another
prize - a trip to Australia as first
prize in a Jaycees National
Speech Contest on litter.
The Korimako Trophy was
presented by Minister of Energy
and local M.P. Mr Bill Birch at
St Stephens College, Bombay.
The finals of the contest were
held there.
Dale spoke on ‘A World
Without Oil’ , and during his
presentation Mr Birch remarked
that perhaps he should consult
dale on the subject of oil.
The tradition of the
Korimako Trophy began with Sir
Bernard Fergusson. When he
was Governor General in the
1960’s he set the speech contest
up to encourage Maori people in
the speaking of ‘improved
English’. The trophy has been
competed for annually since
1970, with secondary school
pupils taking part.
It is sponsored by the Post
Primary Teachers Association
and the N.Z. Maori Education
Foundation.
The presentation was made
before a large gathering in St.
Stephens Hall.
