Head Boy Wins Speech Contest

                           10th June 1981

Head Boy of Ngaruawahia High School, Dale
Timms, received a certificate from President of
Hamilton Jaycees, Mr Colin Boyd. After winning the
Waikato area section of Jaycees Speech contest, Dale
was also first in the Northern area finals.
The Head Boy of Ngaruawahia High School will
be making a speech at the Beehive in Wellington next
                           month.

Seventeen year old Dale Timms was first in the
Northern regional finals of the Jaycees Speech Contest
on Litter control held on 2nd June.

He now goes through to the National Finals which
will be held in the Beehive on 6th July.

                                               A TIDY KIWI NOW
Dale said “The theme of my speech was the
lethargic response of New Zealanders to litter problems.
After speaking on litter control I now have to be a ‘tidy
                           Kiwi’.”

The first and second placegetters from the National
Finals will go on a trip to Australia for an international
                           speech contest.

This will be sponsored by the Jaycees, who are also
paying for Dale’s flight to Wellington in July.
Dale is in the 7th form and will be leaving school
at the end of this year. He says he is interested in going
                           into broadcasting.

He says speaking at the Beehive will be of special
interest as the idea of becoming a politician appeals to
                           him.

Interest in speech-making originated when he was
involved in primary school productions at Glen Massey
School. He took a number of lead parts in Gilbert and
Sullivan, and says this is how he got used to being on
                           stage.
Dale says “I am very excited about speaking at the
Beehive. But I hope I don’t get distractions like the one
at Auckland. Someone’s digital alarm went off right in
                           the middle of my speech.”

He was presented with a Collins Dictionary by
Jaycees after coming first in the northern regional
                           finals.
